Thumbnail Sizes controls which registered sizes WordPress generates for future uploads; it does not unregister the source definition.
Open the feature
Go to Tools > Thumbnails > Thumbnail Sizes.
Before you start
- Identify sizes required by the active theme, WooCommerce, and content blocks.
Recommended workflow
- Review each registered size and its dimensions.
- Keep protected and known frontend sizes enabled.
- Disable only sizes with confirmed no-use evidence.
- Save and upload a test image.
- Verify expected sub-sizes and frontend layouts.
What success looks like
- New uploads generate only the intended sizes.
- Existing thumbnails remain on disk until a separate prune workflow.
Important notes
- A theme or plugin update can register new sizes; repeat the review after major changes.
