Configure Product and Category Earning Rules
Use advanced earning rules to override global earning rates for specific simple products and product categories.
Advanced earning rules let you keep one global earning model while overriding the rate for specific simple products or product categories. Use them when some catalog areas should earn faster or slower than the rest of the store.
Before You Start
- Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Loyalty > General.
- Make sure your loyalty levels and role mapping are already configured.
- Enable Advanced earning rules.
- Review the global Earning rules. These remain the fallback when no product or category rule applies.
Set Product-Level Earning Rules
- Go to Products and edit a simple product.
- Open the Product data box and select the Loyalty tab.
- Under Earning rules, enter the number of points and the order amount for each loyalty level that needs a custom rate.
- Leave a level blank when that level should use the global earning rule.
- Update the product.
Product-level rules are available for simple products. If a simple product has a valid rule for the customer loyalty level, that rule is used before category and global rules.

Set Category-Level Earning Rules
- Go to Products > Categories.
- Add a new category or edit an existing product category.
- Find the Earning rule section.
- Enter the points and amount for each loyalty level that needs a category rate.
- Leave a level blank when that category should fall back to the global earning rule.
- Save the category.

Rule Priority
| Priority | Rule source | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Simple product rule | The product has a valid per-level rule in the Product data > Loyalty tab. |
| 2 | Product category rule | The product category has a valid per-level rule. More specific child categories are checked before parent categories. |
| 3 | Global earning rule | No valid product or category rule exists for the customer loyalty level. |
How Points Are Calculated
- The plugin calculates earning from line-item values, not the final order total.
- The Earning options setting controls whether coupons or taxes are excluded from the amount used for earning.
- Point rounding follows the Point rounding setting: round up or round down.
- An order can only receive purchase points once because the plugin stores an order-level award marker.
Testing Checklist
- Create a test customer in each loyalty level you plan to support.
- Place one order for a product with a product-level rule.
- Place one order for a product that only has a category rule.
- Place one order for a product with no custom rule to confirm the global fallback still works.
- Open the order and the customer points history to confirm the awarded amount and action label.
