Optimize Original Images with Backups and Restore
Resize or recompress JPEG/PNG originals only after verifying backup and restore behavior.

Original optimization is opt-in and requires a physical backup under the plugin backup directory.
Open the feature
Go to Media > Media Optimizer > Settings.
Before you start
- Back up wp-content/uploads independently.
- Test on a copy of a non-critical image.
Recommended workflow
- Enable original optimization and choose resize/quality rules.
- Optimize one attachment.
- Compare dimensions, visual quality, and size.
- Use the restore action and confirm the original returns.
- Expand gradually to a bounded queue.
What success looks like
- Every changed original has a usable plugin backup.
- Restore returns the expected bytes and attachment behavior.
Important notes
- Do not remove backups until the new images have been verified in production and backups exist elsewhere.

- Source and option fingerprints prevent the same lossy original from being optimized repeatedly.
- New backups are stored outside the document root; tracked legacy backups are migrated to the protected location.
- After updating, optimize and restore one non-critical attachment before resuming a bulk queue.
